The Alcon LenSx laser is a new innovation in cataract surgery. Refractive eye surgery, whose goal is to restore vision to glasses- or contact lens-dependent people, has benefitted from femtosecond lasers for many years. The field of cataract surgery, however, has been left out of the revolution – until now.

Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism affect a huge part of the population, and the frustration of constantly relying on glasses and contact lenses is simply too much for some people. Those who want the freedom of being able to see clearly without depending on these aids can now turn to LASIK laser eye surgery to improve their vision. A safe and effective procedure, LASIK uses lasers to reshape the lens of the eye, reconstructing it for improved vision in all light conditions.

What is glaucoma? Not in fact the name of a single disorder itself, “glaucoma” is the name for a group of eye disorders that change the pressure around the optic nerve and can seriously damage it. Since the optic nerve communicates visual information from the eye to the brain, any condition that threatens it poses a serious risk to the patient’s vision. It can even lead to complete blindness if the glaucoma sufferer does not receive the care of an experienced medical professional. Fortunately, Beverly Hills glaucoma sufferers, and those in other regions as well, can turn to established ophthalmologists for help.

Are you tired of searching for and wiping your glasses, tilting your head to see through bifocals, or putting in and taking out dry, irritating contacts? Would you like to go through your day with the absolute certainty that you are seeing your environment as clearly as possible? Vision correction surgery, available in the South Bay, is a proven method of improving quality of life for people with poor vision.

Presbyopia-correcting IOLs have been a core component of my anterior segment practice since I opened my office in Beverly Hills. Today, about 65% of my cataract patients choose a premium IOL over a standard monofocal. I have implanted all the presbyopia-correcting lenses in the U.S. market, including Crystalens (Bausch + Lomb), ReZoom (Abbott Medical Optics), ReSTOR (Alcon) and Tecnis multifocal (AMO). Along the way, like many of my colleagues, I have struggled with how to set reasonable expectations, limit unwanted visual symptoms, and achieve both the uncorrected acuity and quality of vision that patients really want. The good news is that premium IOL technology has advanced rapidly, to the point that we are achieving outstanding results with the latest generation of lenses.

During a recent talk in Chicago, I spoke to a number of doctors to educate them on how to achieve the best results from premium lens surgery. Premium lenses are a main component of my anterior segment practice, with about 70% of my patients choosing a premium lens over a standard lens. As with many of my colleagues, the challenge always exists to build confidence and enthusiasm in the technology while balancing appropriate expectations. However, I believe that there are several things you can do to achieve high patient satisfaction rates and build a successful referral network.
