How to live on a smaller income during a recession

During times of healthy economic conditions, people usually earn quite a bit of money and so several frivolous expenses associated with lifestyle can be well supported by the income earned. Suddenly, when economic times are not so healthy as during a recession, the incoming revenue into the household may not be as high as before. This requires readjustment of ones lifestyle and spending habits to ensure that you can safely cross over the uncertainties associated with recessions and return back to normal lifestyle once good economic conditions prevail again.

Economic conditions always go in cycles. Good economic conditions do not last forever. Neither do bad economic times linger forever. While it may seem hopeless during times of recession, it is a matter of adjusting the lifestyle and spending habits to be within the reduced income levels that may temporarily prevail. This article gives some commonsense tips on where all you can adjust within your personal finances and lifestyle.

First of all, eliminate all fancy restaurant dining. There is no need to spend as much money on one dinner as you would normally for half a week. Next, start taking lunch from home to feed you during the day. Brown bagging is the way to go. Eliminate stopping at your favorite coffee shop on your way back from home. Change from buying fancy nationally televised brands over to store brands and generic goods. This should be applied to everything from toilet paper to orange juice to soda to snacks and other beverages. Stop going to movie theaters and instead rent a dvd or video to watch your favorite movies. Reduce the heat in your house by a couple more degrees than what you are used to and put on additional warm clothing to stay comfortable. Stay away from malls and shopping centers unless you can very well resist the temptation to buy anything. Pretend that your income is lower by an additional five percent and put this extra money into savings. Replace your standard electric bulbs with energy saving ones to save on electricity. Make it a point to turn off lights and fans that are not being used.  All this may sound like retreating to poverty levels, but that is not the point here. The goal is to continue to save even during bad times and steer the home ship safely during recession times, so that you can come back to normal lifestyle habits once good times return.
