Most of us are looking for methods and techniques to maintain and improve our health. After all who does not want to look and feel young? The very fact that health and fitness exercise clubs and gyms and yoga studios are filled with customers is proof that we all are looking for every possible method to keep our bodies hale and healthy. Did you however know that besides adding flavor and taste to your foods, some spices are claimed to have health benefits also? This sounds like a fun and tasty way to improve your health. In this article, we will very briefly explore this aspect of food.
While the basic food components of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water are essential for the proper functioning of the human body, spices are usually added to foods to enhance their taste, add to their flavors and sometimes qualify their aromas. Imagine a plate with food that tastes good and smells good versus one that lacks these qualities. Obviously, the former is the one everyone is going to choose. But as a side advantage, if the tastier and nicer smelling food is also good in certain aspects for your health, you now get double benefits, clearly.
Turmeric is the king of spices as claimed by the Indian culture. Indians use a lot of turmeric in curries, stews and such. It has a yellow color and acts as a coloring ingredient. Additionally, turmeric is supposed to possess anti inflammatory properties and anti septic properties. Cayenne pepper makes foods hot and spicy but is supposed to help in improved blood circulation. Black pepper corns also behave in a similar manner. Crushed black pepper added to warm milk and consumed at night is claimed to have soothing properties for the membranes of the throat and relaxing especially if you have coughing problems. Coriander leaves that are usually green in color add a tremendously pleasant aroma to foods and is supposed to aid in digestion. Fenugreek which generally has no taste is also claimed to have value for the digestive system. Dried ginger added to foods is claimed to have anti flatulant properties. Consumption of sea salt as opposed to regular salt is supposed to provide the body with trace minerals that are advantageous to health.
As you can see, spices not only make the foods we eat more palatable, they are also helpful to maintain and improve our health if consumed properly.
