View all articles by Amit ShahHair styling salons are present in most shopping centers and plazas everywhere, because that is a business that is always needed by customers. Within a small radius, you will find several such hair salons and many of them compete strongly with each other for revenues. How does one then start a hair styling establishment or purchase an existing hair salon and operate it profitably. That is exactly what we will try to delve into in this article briefly.
First of all, the hair styling business is like any other business in that you need a solid and recurring customer base. Customers that come in only once and are not repeat customers will generally not add much value to your hair styling salon business. Every customer that walks in the door should be converted to a repeat customer by providing incentives for repeat usage of your hair styling facilities. Secondly, you need to provide good hours of operation that are in line with the needs of the customer rather than your own convenience. A standard nine to six routine will not take you anywhere because there a dozen more of them possibly in your area that offer the same timings. Your pricing structure should be such that it is at the very least competitive with other hair styling salons and barber styling salons in the neighborhood and you can offer discounts for repeat customers after they have visited your salon some number of times. You could offer alternatively a free hair cut for a child if the mother spends a significant sum of money. You can nudge customers to come to your store by sending out reminder cards every so often reminding them that it is time for their hair styling and such. You need to establish a bond with your customers that is of a more social nature by sending a small gift, not necessarily expensive but in good taste, during holiday and festive seasons. The location of your store needs to be amenable for customers to find you easily and in a high traffic area if possible. The internals of the store need to be clean and well lighted. Take out and remove all clutter and old magazines. You could supplement your main hair styling services revenue with sale of related hair dressing products, shampoos and the like. To increase your customer base, you could set up a referral program with your current customers to the effect of giving them something free such as a free shampoo bottle if they refer a friend or something to that effect. After all, the best advertising comes by word of mouth and personal introductions. You have to keep your costs under control. This may involve negotiating with your suppliers for lower pricing and consigned goods and so on. Above all, you need to be good with your services. All of the business solutions addressed in this article will not amount to anything if you provide a bad quality when it comes to hair styling services. People expect high quality services to be rendered all the time and you need to provide that unequivocally and you will be on your way to making good profits in the hair styling business.
