Stand up comedy is picking up speed in the Indian entertainment industry. While Bollywood entertainment circles have embraced stand up comedy for quite some time now, the entertainment industry in Chennai is only now catching on but to their credit they are catching up fast.

However, there is a marked difference between stand up routines performed by South Indian movie stars as well as stand up comedians versus their Hollywood counterparts. The key difference is in the content between the two. This can be seen by evaluating very closely for example ten minute presentations on television in the West, such as Comedy Central and television in South India such as Vijay TV or Sun TV. Stars such as Erode Mahesh, Madurai Muthu, etc are well known there as are Chris Rock or Lewis Black in America.

The key difference in content is that while Hollywood comedians maintain their comedy routine built around a theme or an experience, South Indian comedians seem to put together a series of unconnected humor and unconnected humorous episodes. While this may be acceptable to the untrained ear, sophisticated jesters and advanced audience, such as what the author claims himself to be one of, find such an unconnected presentation rather naive and unsophisticated.

As mentioned, the Indian entertainment audience is quite happy with these comedy routines, but it is only a matter of time before they graduate and expect higher quality presentations and the comics will need to add more pizzaz into their routines. How soon this will happen? No one can really tell.
